...There were questions regarding what kind of modes of attention are paid in a context such as a museum or a library. What could these modes of attention be liberated for? Could they be made use of in some other ways? Could they become an instrument of liberation, as in the Inverted Research Tool (Edgar Schmitz and Liam Gillick)?... Irit Rogoff: Turning

In the Library of the Van Abbemuseum, Liam Gillick and Edgar Schmitz installed a multifunctional banner/projection screen. Two banners outside the museum carry the same text as the library but reversed and inverted. It is only through entry to the museum that the text becomes clear. The banner in the library is additionally a screen for the projection of a list of movies that may have to do with learning as encounters and forms of contact. The films include Pier Paolo Pasolini: Teorema (1968)/ Andy Warhol: My Hustler (1965)/ Jean-Luc Godard: Prénom Carmen (1983)/ Paul Morrissey: Madame Wang's (1981)/ Rainer Werner Fassbinder: Chinesisches Roulette (1976). These films will play during the opening hours of the Library. The work is further supplemented by a series of bookmarks, a functional echo of the larger work, that can be kept and used. Bio - Edgar Scmitz

Edgar Schmitz is an artist, the co-director of A Conversation in Many Parts, an international discursive platform for contemporary art and concepts, and a lecturer in Critical Studies at Goldsmiths. Recent exhibitions include British Art Show 7 – In The Days of the Comet, Hayward Gallery and touring (2010/11), extra added bonus material, FormContent (2010), Dictionary of War, Steirischer Herbst Graz (2006); A-C-A-D-E-M-Y, Vanabbemuseum Eindhoven (2006); and Liam Gillick: ‘Edgar Schmitz’, ICA London (2005). He has also written extensively on contemporary art, with contributions to Kunstforum international, Texte zur Kunst and artforum as well as contemporary, tema celeste and numerous catalogue essays, including texts on Rainer Werner Fassbinder and Phil Collins, on Brian Jungen’s animalities, on humour in Deleuze and Slominski, and on Sarah Morris’ LA.
